ASTM A312 A358 and A778 Stainless Steel Pipe Standards Explained

ASTM A312, A358 and A778 can all appear in stainless steel pipe specifications, but they do not describe interchangeable products. Each standard controls a different combination of manufacturing route, heat treatment, inspection and intended service. Selecting by diameter or grade alone can leave a project with the wrong documentation or performance requirements.

Key takeaways

  • A312 covers seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipe.
  • A358 covers electric-fusion-welded pipe with defined manufacturing classes.
  • A778 covers welded, unannealed products for selected low and moderate temperature corrosive duties.

What ASTM A312 covers

ASTM A312 is commonly specified for austenitic stainless steel process pipe used in high-temperature or general corrosive service. It includes seamless pipe, straight-seam welded pipe and heavily cold-worked welded pipe. Common grades include 304L and 316L.

A312 is widely used for industrial process lines because it establishes requirements for manufacture, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions and testing. The project must still state the grade, size, schedule, construction and any supplementary inspection needed.

Steelmor stocks A312 welded and seamless pipe in Schedules 10S, 40S and 80S across selected size ranges.

When ASTM A358 is considered

ASTM A358 covers electric-fusion-welded austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel pipe for high-temperature service and general applications. It is particularly relevant when larger diameters or fabricated pipe are required.

The A358 class is part of the specification and affects how the pipe is welded, heat treated and radiographically examined. A buyer should never write only A358 on a requisition. The applicable class, grade, dimensions, test requirements and project code must also be clear.

Steelmor can manufacture larger welded pipe to A358 Classes 1 to 5, subject to the required size and project specification. Early discussion is useful because large-bore pipe may involve plate availability, forming, longitudinal welding, testing and longer production lead times.

Where ASTM A778 fits

ASTM A778 covers straight-seam and spiral-seam welded, unannealed austenitic stainless tubular products. It is intended for corrosive service at low and moderate temperatures where post-weld heat treatment is not required for corrosion resistance.

The word unannealed is important. It distinguishes A778 from specifications that impose solution heat treatment or different mechanical and testing requirements. An A778 product should therefore not replace A312 or A358 simply because the nominal diameter, wall and grade appear similar.

A778 can be suitable for water, wastewater and other general corrosive applications when the design code and project specification allow it. Pressure duty, weld examination and acceptance criteria remain engineering decisions.

How to choose between the three standards

Start with the service conditions and governing design code. Define pressure, temperature, fluid chemistry, diameter, wall thickness, grade, corrosion allowance and consequence of failure. Then match the product specification and construction route to those requirements.

Procurement teams should also confirm heat treatment, radiography, hydrostatic or non-destructive testing, dimensional tolerances and material certification. A complete material certificate review should confirm that the delivered product matches the purchase order.

A practical comparison should also include the available manufacturing route. Smaller standard lines may favour stocked A312 pipe, while a large-diameter system may need plate-formed A358 pipe. A778 may suit an approved lower-temperature corrosive duty. The final choice should follow the engineer’s design basis rather than price or delivery time alone.

Put the standard and class on the purchase order

The correct standard narrows the acceptable manufacturing route and quality requirements. It does not replace the rest of the pipe specification. Naming the standard, edition, class where applicable, grade and inspection requirements gives the supplier and fabricator one clear basis for delivery.
