Understanding the Corrosion Resistance Of Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is one of the most versatile and well-used materials across various industries. There are many reasons for this, top of the list being its corrosion resistance. Because of this, it is able to be used in environments that many other materials would rot or corrode.

The reason it is so resistant to corrosion is a thin layer of oxide on the surface of the steel. This is referred to as the passive layer and renders the steel surface electrochemically passive when it comes into contact with corrosive environments.

What Industries Benefit From This?

There are very few industries that do not benefit from the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Most materials decay over time, but unless you are using it in coastal environments with large exposure to high chloride environments stainless steel should have very few problems.

Choice of materials is always project dependant, but most materials rot or corrode over time. This is where stainless steel has the upper hand. Even though it is not completely immune to all forms of corrosion, it is definitely the better choice when working in any of these three industries for a number of reasons.

Building And Construction

Construction industries greatly benefit from using stainless steel, and not only because of the corrosion resistance. It is also highly sustainable, easy to use and adheres to the appearance standards.

Pharmaceutical And Science

Across all the areas in the pharmaceutical and scientific industries, stainless steel is one of the most used materials. From the wire trays and baskets used to sterilise equipment to manufacturing equipment and even as far as being used in the production of cryogenic storage facilities.

Food And Beverage

Another industry that utilizes stainless steel in large quantities is food and beverage. While the corrosion resistance is hugely beneficial and necessary, stainless steel is also low cost, low upkeep and sustainable long term.
