Over the last few years, the use of metal as a roofing material has begun to increase. Metal has many benefits as a roof, being fire resistant and long-lasting.
As we many people move towards a more sustainable lifestyle, the question many are asking is if they have metal roofs, are solar panels still an option?
The answer is yes!
While having a metal roof does pose some unique challenges, with the right research on installation there should be no problems.
There are a few things to consider when installing solar onto your metal roof, but the first is to check the lifespan of the roof. If it is on the newer side then you can proceed with your panels, but if it is a few years away from needing to be replaced, then consider waiting until then as removing and reinstalling panels can be a big extra cost.
Metal Roof, Solar Panels
While it is always best to consult a structural engineer or roofing specialist before fiddling with your roof, here are a few things to consider when it comes to metal roofs and solar panels.
- Avoid bending the seam to fit a clamp – this will void your warranty on your roof, so rather find a clamp that fits the seam properly.
- Research reverse seam deck options – these are the hardest to work with, and often the valleys are too narrow to fit standard mounts without disrupting water flow. Look into special mounts and spacers that will also avoid crushing the deck.
- Consider what is below the roof – don’t forget to look at what is below your roof. Some roofs have foam insulation and tightening mounts could cause damage to this.
- Use the correct self-drilling screws – look into screws that can go through metal and into the wooden beams.
